MLBTR's team-by-team look at the upcoming trade deadline continues with a look at the Colorado Rockies, who are on pace to break the 2024 White Sox' modern-day record for losses in a single season. General manager Bill Schmidt's club is on pace for a staggering 37 wins this season -- a mark that 23 of the game's 29 other clubs have already reached as of late June. The Rockies are a clear seller -- or at least, they should be. The Rox typically march to the beat of their own drum, however, and owner Dick Monfort seems particularly averse to any large-scale sell-offs.
Still, given the Rockies' historic futility in 2025, the expectation is that they'll move some veteran pieces, while the fan base's hope might be for an uncharacteristically active deadline on the sell side of things.
Record: 18-62 (0% playoff odds, per FanGraphs)
Other series entries: Giants, Phillies, Pirates, Astros, Marlins
Sell Mode
Impending free agents: Germán Márquez, Thairo Estrada, Austin Gomber, Kyle Farmer, Orlando Arcia
Márquez has been a pillar for the Rockies' staff since coming over in a 2015-16 offseason trade that sent outfielder Corey Dickerson to the Rays. The Rox have resisted trading him in the past, twice signing him to extensions. He's now in his first full season post-Tommy John surgery, earning $10MM. There'll be about $3.17MM of that sum yet to be paid out of as of deadline day. Márquez got out to an awful start but has turned in a 3.21 ERA in 47 2/3 innings over his past nine starts (though that includes six unearned runs in his last start against the Dodgers). His 17.6% strikeout rate in that span is nowhere near peak levels, but his command has been good and he's averaging better than 95 mph on his heater. Plenty of teams would look at Marquez's velocity and track record of missing bats and think they could turn him around further.

No way they’re selling this year.
Way.
They’ve already sold their soul to the devil Dick Montfort
Cohn – Now that Story is healthy and playing well, maybe the Rockies bring him back? That would surely sell tickets.
Fever: What have you got against Story?
avenger – Why do you say that?
It’s funny because I’ve been the only one around here and elsewhere who has supported him while most Sox fans have bashed him hard all year.
And I repeatedly said before the season that I expected a strong bounceback season for him.
Oh wait a minute ….. just dawned on me, you were joking about him going to the worst team in baseball ….. nevermind then. LOL
Their SP is awful. I thought Marquez and Doyle would be better. Why have a few nice pieces, but that offense needs so much help to help that terrible staff.
Franchise is worse than Benson Boone… They literally have no direction until they get out of the abysmal contracts of Marquez, Senzatela, Freeland, McMahon, and the black hole of Kris Bryant.
Hey, if they won every game the rest of the season, they would end up with 100 wins!!
I say they should go for it. BUY BUY BUY!
Colorado Team and deadline outlook in one word- Bleak.
Trade McMahon and Bird to the Mets for Mauricio and Tidwell, Mauricio becomes their 3b and Tidwell might be their Ace 😆, helps both teams the Mets get their 3b and bullpen help the Rockies gets out of McMahons contract with an inexpensive 3b
Now that McMahon is actually hitting, perhaps. Ryan Clifford instead of Mauricio.
McMahon has put up below average OPS+ every single year… playing in Coors. He’s not really the answer for most teams
That’s because unless you hit like Larry Walker in his prime, OPS+ punishes people unfairly for playing in Colorado. Coors Field in 2025 is not like Coors Field in 1999 or even 2015. There are a lot more low scoring games, especially when the weather is cold. When it gets hot, you do still have the occasional 14-12 game, but that is true of every stadium.
McMahon’s contract is not that bad. He is getting $12MM this year and $16MM the next two. That is less than half of Alex Bregman’s deal and he is not the same player as Bregman, but he is not 50% of the player Bregman is either. McMahon is not a superstar, but he is still of the better 3B in the game especially on defense.
Is Hunter Goodman available?
Probably not
No, Hunter Goodman, Chase Dollander and Ezequiel Tovar are the only UNTOUCHABLES.All the rest of the roster is open to trade.
Doubtful. This is the Rockies after all.
I would probably add Brenton Doyle to that list. Unless they are absolutely blown away by an offer for him, he is going nowhere. And since he is kind of slumping offensively this year (perfectly understandable since his wife miscarried in May…you wouldn’t be right at your job either), I doubt that offer is coming.
@hiflew: That’s a great point. Look, I’m a crazy believer in Brenton Doyle and his future here in Colorado. I’d put him on my Untouchables list, along with Charlie Condon and Cole Carrig. But that’s as far as I would go. I like Jordan Beck, a lot, as well as Kyle Karros. The sooner we trade Ryan McMahon the sooner we can see Kyle Karros at the Hot Corner. He reminds me a lot of Jeff Cirillo, and I’m fine with that. Give a .300 hitting, Gold Glove 3rd Basemen who still going to drive in runs while hitting well above the .300 batting average and a lot can happen.
Marquez and Gomber have value in the fact that starting pitchers always have value. Doesn’t mean any top tier prospects are coming back but they may be able to land a few useful pieces for both of them
All, is well, Walker Monfort, will fix everything.
I do think he can bring something different. He’s been studying the other mid-market ballclubs and said Colorado needed to model themselves after those franchises.
He also said there would be more changes coming, and wants to go outside of the organization; meaning I do think Bill Schmidt will be gone at seasons end, and an entirely new voice will be running the organization.
You mean Scrooge McDuck? He’s been raping the fans since he’s been alive.
It’s the Rockies. They won’t do anything.
They’ll do something, but it probably won’t be good. Remember, they’re still paying for Nolan Arenado.
This has nothing to do with Arenado, not anymore. This has to do with the owner pocketing tons of cash while raping all of the fans with his nasty old, stinky shriveled up dong.
Yikes…
Colorado fans are not the smartest fans in baseball. 30-40 k show up to watch this garbage. Stay the hell away and if it affects owners pocket books, then and only then will things change.
Schmidt should be fired today, so something can be done prior to trade deadline.
Right, I’ve noticed that watching a Rockies game lowers your IQ by at least 50 points.
You can’t blame the fans for not being Fairweather fans. Rockies‘s fans are among the most loyal in baseball and I’m a Braves fan. you blame the dip$h1t owner that’s the only one you can blame.
Only if they’re playing the Dodgers and the stadium is filled with dodger fans
The Rockies should honestly just play to their strengths. Make trades for position player talent, and load up on hitters in the draft. Get rangy outfielders with power, and corner infielders who are going to give you a ton of home runs. I know that’s easier said than done, but it’s probably the best way for the Rockies to go about things. Your pitchers are literally fighting mother nature. As long as not every pitcher has an ERA over like 5.50, they may be able to find some success just leaning super heavily into position player talent.
I have been saying this all along. Despite what people want to believe, Coors Field is not an automatic +.200 to your OPS. This Colorado team is actually built more for defense than offense. Although you cannot really tell since their defense hasn’t been very good this year. But the entire infield is known more for defense than offense. Center field is the same. Left field with Beck is still not really sure. He has shown potential with both offense and defense, but neither stands out just yet. Right field with the Moniak/Freeman platoon is just basically a placeholder.
They need to get sluggers in there because 14-12 wins with 5 homers and 15+ strikeouts are much more to watch than 3-2 losses with zero homers and 15+ strikeouts.
As I read this, they are more defense than offense mainly because they are so little offense.
They have 2 Gold Glove winners and 2 others that probably should have won GGs already. So even if their offense was better, they would still be known more for defense than offense.
Point taken, but we know plus defenders are practically a dime a dozen around baseball. On most teams they are utility players if they can’t hit for much.
Dick Monfort should be thrown off a building as many stories high as the Rockies have losses.
Now? Or wait till the end of the season?
Many people said “no don’t trade Marquez” at his peak value while Colorado began to decline. Sign Kris Bryant after trading Arenado. 2025 they have arrived at rock bottom. Deal as many players as possible.
As for the pitching situation/altitude, maybe the solution is to draft and develop hitters, sign veteran arms and play like it’s a track meet. The develop pitching approach is not working.
They’d have to significantly overpay to attract veteran pitchers to Denver. But the catch-22 is that they’ve been unable to develop pitchers. Not a good situation.
No. That’s not the veteran pitcher I’m referring to. They guys trying to hang on. Cheap guys who’ll get blown up in any stadium. Signing vets to minor league contracts or guaranteed contracts that aren’t expensive.
I’m pretty new here and just curious what is the cost for a subscription on here so I can read articles like this?
Like $30 per year. Best deal in town.
