The Diamondbacks announced that closer Shelby Miller has gone on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 6, with a forearm strain. Arizona recalled rookie righty Juan Morillo to step into the vacated bullpen spot.
It’s the latest hit to the D-Backs bullpen, one that seems likely to have ramifications for the trade market. The Snakes have yet to provide a timetable for Miller’s return, but he’ll be out until at least July 21. A forearm injury certainly threatens to sideline him beyond a minimal stint. There’s not a ton of leeway for him to make it back prior to the July 31 deadline.
Arizona kicks off a pivotal four-game series in San Diego this evening. They sport a 44-46 record and sit 4.5 games back of the National League’s last Wild Card spot. The Padres currently occupy the final playoff position; each of the Giants, Cardinals and Reds sit between San Diego and Arizona. The D-Backs would nearly close the gap with the Friars if they manage a sweep. If they lose the series (or get swept themselves), they could fall seven or eight games back with the All-Star Break looming. The next few days may be crucial for determining their deadline trajectory.
In either case, a long-term injury for Miller would be significant. GM Mike Hazen said last week that the Snakes would prioritize adding to the bullpen if they’re in position to buy. That comes as no surprise, as Miller had been thrust into the ninth inning by season-ending injuries to Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk. While the veteran righty has pitched well, Hazen noted that the whole bullpen would benefit from the addition of a late-game weapon who could free skipper Torey Lovullo to use Miller a little earlier in games. If Miller is out beyond the deadline, that only becomes more pressing.
If the Diamondbacks don’t play their way into buying, a healthy Miller would be one of their clearest trade candidates. He’s an impending free agent playing on a modest salary after signing an offseason minor league deal. He’d fit into the budget for every team and would be an upgrade to any bullpen. The 34-year-old carries a 1.98 earned run average through 36 innings. He has fanned 28% of opposing hitters against a 7.7% walk rate. Miller has recorded 10 saves — he entered the season with three career saves — and another eight holds while getting whiffs on 15% of his offerings.
Miller is one of the top rental relievers who may be available. It’s possible that still comes to pass if he returns within three weeks, but a forearm injury has the potential to significantly reduce his trade value. While he would be eligible to be traded even if he’s on the injured list come July 31, the D-Backs would have a tough time getting much in return if he doesn’t demonstrate he’s healthy.
This is crazy news, I dont know what’s going on with pitchers nowadays but it’s OH NO WAIT IT’S A DIAMONDBACK SO THIS IS NORMAL.
You see pitchers literally throwing as hard as they can, every single pitch. Stuff is going to tear like that.
He throws like 95 idk what’s up with him
Yeah that’s not even fast.
Uh-Oh.
When will we ever see a manager that understands how to handle a pitching staff in AZ
“See a manager”…Yeah, the manager’s the reason the Snakes have suffered so many pitching injuries. I’m completely baffled that no one but you has figured this out before.
Do you think every teams manager is the reason for numerous pitching injuries throughout MLB? Baseball owes you a complete debt of gratitude, because you just solved their biggest performance problem, injuries.
Thank you. Feels good to be appreciated
Probably by looking in the opposing dug out.
Oh ohh queue Lonny Dong Surgery
Dave Stewart isn’t going to like hearing this.
Not too many teams hit harder by injuries outside of the Red Sox and maybe Dodgers, especially in the pen.
And the braves with their starting rotation
The Dbacks have two starters with Tommy John and now six relievers out for the year with TJ or back surgery assuming he has to get it. Also three position players with broken bones from hit by pitches, it’s been a fun year lol.
Let’s not forget the Cubs also
D-Backs also lost Pavin Smith and Ryan Thompson to the IL, and now Ketel Marte is day to day with right groin tightness.
Will the injuries ever end?
This team has apparently been cursed this season.
They’re, dare I say, snake-bit.
A forearm strain may not make it possible for Miller to return by next years trade deadline either. You cross your fingers and hope it’s not another season ending injury
He was only signed for this year, not sure why next season matters at this point.
Sheesh… bring on closer number four.
Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in many years…and I live in Phoenix
The Snakes have clearly been, and excuse the pun, snakebitten this year. First it was Jordon Montgomery who was looking to make good on his 2024 FA contract who was lost for the year. Next came this season’s big FA signing Corbin Burnes going down for the count. Losing both Martinez and Puk torpedoed the two best end-of-game options.
Carroll got hurt. Naylor, though good, hasn’t duplicated Walker’s power at 1B. Ketel always seems to get these little nagging injuries that cost him games and, for the team, much need plate appearances.
Right now, I’d go with Ginkel to close. He was pretty decent last year but might have been overworked causing him to miss a lot of time early on this year.
As an aside, that catch Thomas made in CF last night was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Saved Ginkel’s bacon and the win.
D-Backs will most likely add at the deadline. They can’t easily forget what can happen if you just make the October playoff dance because they made it to the WS in 2023 as a 6th Seed.
But they are going to need more than just a lock-down closer to get that done. If I’m the GM, I’m a seller and would even entertain offers for Gallen. He’d bring a huge return.
Snakebitten is an understatement of year, they got to sell sell sell, most of them are free agents anyway.Gallen should be first sinse every team is looking for starters.
Other teams have had as many injuries, some more, some less.

None have as many who are out for the season and none have as many who are essential to their success (SPs and closers).
4.2 WAR for the Braves while going 6-17 is bonkers
Time to call the Brewers on Payamps and Pegura.
The Dbacks are in exactly the same position in the standings as they were 10 games ago. They are scuffling around .500. But so are All of the other teams ahead of them in the Wild Card standings. So, the Dbacks are absolutely NOT slam dunk sellers at the trade deadline.
I think they will still be buyers And sellers. The question is, “Who can they sell that will give them the return they need, without diminishing their ability to compete for a Wild Card spot this year?” I can say who they definitely will NOT trade—pitchers. Dbacks started the season with 7 starters and are down to 5. They cannot afford to trade any of them and still compete this season. And they figure to add to, not subtract from their depleted bullpen.
So, the only “sell” possibilities are position players or prospects. First valuable position player is probably Josh Naylor. Second, is Eugenio Suarez, but he is more of a long shot to be traded, especially with Jordan Lawler on the IL at AAA. Third is the glut of OF on the roster and in the minors. Fourth, is prospect capital, especially prospects in the lower minors who might be attractive to trade to selling teams who are out of this year’s post season push.
Who will the Dbacks buy? Duh, relievers.
