The starting lineups for the 95th All-Star Game were revealed earlier this week, and the league has now announced the rest of the American League and National League rosters for the upcoming Midsummer Classic on July 15 in Atlanta. Each roster is comprised of 32 players — the nine starting position players determined by fan voting, and then 23 pitchers and backup position players selected by both a player ballot and input from the Commissioner’s office.
The league’s share of the reserve picks will help adhere to the rule that every team must have at least one All-Star rep. This rule could also be observed via substitutions that will inevitably be named to the rosters in the coming days, as some players won’t participate in the All-Star Game due to injury or personal choice. The starting pitchers won’t be announced until July 14, with each team’s manager (Aaron Boone for the AL and Dave Roberts for the NL) deciding who will get the honor of the All-Star start.
The Dodgers lead the way with five players selected, while the Tigers and Mariners each had four players selected. Nineteen of the players in this year’s game are making their All-Star debuts. Clayton Kershaw made the team specifically as a “Legend Pick” from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, in a nod to Kershaw’s performance over what is sure to be a Hall-of-Fame career.

Of course I’m biased, but there’s no reason Joe Ryan and Jhoan Duran shouldn’t be on this list.
Just wait for a half dozen injury replacements to roll in for each league
Rx – Hopefully Bregman is one of them, even if he returns this week. He should use the 4-day break for further recovery.
Surprised Bregman is an all-star considering how much time he has missed. Definitely should take the time to make sure he is ready. Excellent to hear the all-stars are going to wear there own team uniforms again. Very nostalgic.
Suzuki of the Cubs will probably be one of them. He’s leading the NL in RBIs.
How bout before the All Star Game, we have an All Hacks Game with people like, oh idk, Tim (Jackie) Anderson, Alex Verdugo, Gary Sanchez, DJ Lemahieu & Candelario just to name a few, I know I’d watch. Ahahahahahaha!
Well, it’s not egregious, but Matt Chapman could well have been included for the NL, but the Giants already have 3 pitchers on the team. And often very good players don’t make it.
He might have made it jf he didn’t get hurt.
I think the Twins record was part of the reason. Small market and really good pitchers that aren’t the reason the club is winning. Not right but part of reality that steers the narrative in baseball
Joe Ryan is third in the AL in pitcher WAR, behind only Skubal and Brown. His being left off is a travesty. Shane Smith as an all star is a joke, and while they had to pick someone from the White Sox, Davis Martin is pitching better than Smith.
Limited spots and ensuring representation from all teams.
I agree, Ryan and Duran have been good, I think better than some that were picked.
Incoming “How could they choose X player over Y player?!?” comments.
There’s always going to be more players that are arguably deserving to be an All-Star than there are spots available.
Thanks Waldo. I guess we shouldn’t even discuss this anymore, since you dropped that earth shattering observation on us.
I don’t see how they didn’t choose like 10 guys above acuna. He has only played 39 games this year
ballz – Who would you rather watch, Acuna or some rando player who had a good start to the season?
Real baseball fans want to see stars, he’s one of the biggest.
I’d take Soto over him.
I want to see the real stats and Juan Soto is definitely one of them. I like seeing the legends also. This is entertainment .
cdc – Did you see my explanation of the Giolito contract?
I’d rather watch another guy getting a chance to be rewarded for good play and not name recognition. I am not saying acuna isn’t a good player but he doesn’t deserve it over other players that deserve to have all star added to their player name. There isn’t any reason to actually make an all star game anymore except the prestige and popularity shouldn’t be rewarded the way play is.
Yes I did. So if if continues to pitch well and exceed 140 IP, he will more than likely become a free agent. He will be 31 years old, probably looking for a 4/5 year deal $30 + million per. At least ,I assume.
Cdc – He’s looking very likely to surpass the 140 innings.
He has 14 starts remaining, figure he will average 6 innings each start …. that’s 84 innings plus the 66 innings he’s already pitched …. that’s 150 innings.
And the thing is, he’s dominating against good teams …. Tampa, Seattle, SF and Toronto.
Between him and Story, I’m feeling pretty good about my preseason expectations ;O)
He may be ,if he continues to pitch well a very sought after arm. I’ve read he really enjoys it here. Not that I would expect him to give to much of a discount. The Sox would definitely be in the need for a #2/3 starter. Several good ones will be available. Peralta,Cease, Valdez to name a couple. Of course there is a bunch of season left and much can and will happen. Hopefully he dominates for the rest of the year.
cdc – Agreed! As the NESN guys correctly pointed out, Giolito has been the ace of the staff the past few weeks …. not Crochet, who has been roughed up his last two starts against teams that are not good. His ERA right now is basically the same as Houck’s going into the break last year …. hopefully Crochet can avoid the second half struggles that Houck went through.
I like the way Crochet is built. Thick lower half. Very strong. He is probably going to blow past his most innings pitched. Which is a concern, especially if we go to the (OMG) playoffs. Pitching is such a crapshoot. I’ve mentioned before 3 out of the top 4 guys , Snell,Sasaki and Burnes all on big time IL. Fried , being the 4th is pitching exceptionally. Do you realize the 2021 White Sox had Giolito,Cease,Rodon as well as a young Crochet and Kopech on the there staff. Crazy.
cdc – I agree, the natural concern is that perhaps Crochet is tiring. His velocity has definitely been down the past couple starts. He is a very big, strong guy, but that doesn’t always translate to Nolan Ryan-esque endurance.
The way the team pushes their pitchers to throw as hard as possible still troubles me. Yesterday the NESN guys were saying Fitts desperately wants to reach 100MPH because the team would reward him with a T-shirt and give him special recognition. He’s already been around 98-99 MPH, is it really worth risking injury just for an additional 1-2 MPH?
Yes the ChiSox have really been in a downward spiral the past few years, winning is not a priority for them. They are already on pace for the worst record in MLB history, and yet they still will be selling off some of their better players at the trade deadline. A salary floor can’t come fast enough.
Fitts has been very good this year. I did hear about the tshirts, thought that was very strange ,Why put any added stress on a pitchers arm, especially for a damned tshirt.
cdc – Yeah that’s been their mantra for a while, throw as hard as you can as often as you can.
Hey I’m just glad they FINALLY realized pushing a huge launch angle is not the way to go. Did you hear them talking about it last night on the postgame? I really love watching pregame and postgame, I get a lot of information that way. I thought it was really cool how Roman and Marcelo pushed back on the launch angle thing and said they were gonna focus on line drives ….. really made me happy to hear. And like the NESN guys said, when you hit the ball on the ground at 112 MPH like Roman did last night you’re gonna get your share of hits.
Honestly this is the happiest I’ve been about the offensive approach in a long time!
Hot take:
Julio Rodriguez deserves to make it. He has 3.4 WAR in the season already.
His .695 OPS would say otherwise
Hot Take: WAR is a bit misleading. He gets a boosted WAR because he is in CF. Same with SS. I guess most CF are really bad? thats all I got.
How does Andrew abbot not make the cut
Brewers, Cardinals, Reds with 1 player each. Something to be said for winning without all stars I suppose.
That more accurately describes Boyd
Has Boyd’s career of mediocrity had stats that said he was better?
I’m confused, I thought the All Star Game each year was based on the current seasons stats, not career averages.
Opposing hitters say he isn’t.
I agree, originally I was just saying abbot deserved a spot and this yahoo starts on about regression yada yada
One name is missing: Figgins
Chone Figgins was great but he retired about a decade ago
About 50 players were robbed of Ana all star spot
Julio over a lot of other players is certainly a choice, especially when Seattle already has three other representatives.
Over Springer??
Im a big mariners fan, but even i can see the arguments for springer over Julio. JRod does play wayyy better defense than him tho. Methinks Georgie will moon walk into the summer classic dude to injuries or “rest”.
Barring injuries to any position players, Juan Soto will not be in the All-Star Game. That’s what you get for choosing money over a winning tradition.
What does one thing have to do with the other? Earlier in the season, he wasn’t playing at an All-Star level, now he is, but the Mets weren’t going to get more than three players on the team with their poor end to June when all of the teams need representation.
Of course Soto is “playing at an All-Star level”. In Sunday’s getaway game he got doubled off first on a play the Mets challenged and lost.
Well that’s reason to throw about the fact that he was player of the month
What winning tradition do you speak of? And how does money impact Soto’s all star eligibility?
That winning tradition is largely due to money
Thanks for the laugh.
The team he’s on is better than the one he left. I guess he did choose winning.
Soto chose money. The people who vote for the All-Star teams understand that.
Soto chose money just like nearly any player and any NY Yankee
Wonder how often Chucky passes up on raises at work cause he’d rather not put the focus of his work on the money
Kershaw is a legacy pick, I guess.
Trash picking find
Clayton Kershaw made the team specifically as a “Legend Pick”
===============================
Nonsense. He is well-deserved “Legend Pick”. I’ve been arguing in favor of this for about 50 years. Each league should have an official captain who HOF candidacy is a sure thing, but whose AS stats are lacking.
Yes. But has pretty good traditional stats, so not a horrible player to have on the team.
Doesn’t deserve it this year.
I’m not sure I like the idea of “Legacy” picks, since previous to last year, that was never a consideration, or at least so obvious, that qualified someone above other better-performing players.
It’s nothing new. Mantle and Mays always made it in their later years, whether they were having good seasons or not.
Pete – Many people think it’s the “Best Performers For 3 Months Game”.
It’s meant to include longtime stars too.
Did you watch the last Ripken All-Star Game appearance? It was awesome.
The first all star game I remember watching was in 1983 and featured way-over-the-hill Carl Yastrzemski and Johnny Bench, who were in their last seasons. So, agreed, it’s nothing new.
Untrue. Willie Mays made 24 all-star teams. Did he deserve it all 24 times? No, but it was a better game because he was there.
Why are you arguing when you’re agreeing with me?
Says it right in the article…
“Clayton Kershaw made the team specifically as a “Legend Pick” from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, in a nod to Kershaw’s performance over what is sure to be a Hall-of-Fame career”
A pretty good indicator it’s his last season
There are at least 3 injury replacements to come (Sale, Bregman, Pena), and possibly 4 with Brandon Lowe leaving the game today. There will also be a few starters who throw next Sunday, who will have to be replaced. So some of the “snubs” will get their due.
I think the biggest surprise for me was the inclusion of two middle relievers (Adam and Rodriguez) on the NL squad when there were some deserving closers (Pagan, Suarez, Megill). And it’s not like either the Padres or Giants didn’t have other representation.
FYI, the Pirates pulled Skenes after 5 innings today (78 pitches) to make sure he’s lined up to start the ASG for the NL.
Mariners also were getting a bunch of hits off of him, and they probably didn’t want a third time through the order
All you have to do is look at Randy Rodriquez’ stats on Baseball-Reference. I’m not sure there’s a relief pitcher—including Closers—who are better than RR. He dominates. He’s had one bad outing in 38 games!
Bruh randy Rodriguez has a 552 era+. Even if ERA doesn’t matter, just let that sink in
Jason Adam belongs. Tatis does not. Wish Pivetta got in. Very deserving.
Jason Adam has been great.
McKinstry biggest snub.
Absolutely…he’s having a great season as a utility spark plug for the Tigers. Not sure where they’d be without him
He’ll likely replace Bregman.
I concur, he’s deserving as anyone they picked, but Boone wasn’t going to put 6 Tigers on the roster. Best should be in there too! But you have to spread the roster out to make everyone happy, just a fact of life.
I think you meant Vest. McKinstry won today’s game against Cleveland with his base running. He’s played 3B, SS, 2B, LF, RF, CF,and today, 1B. He changed his swing and is hitting for average, as well as against LH pitching. He is 38th in WAR. He is a deserving All-Star.
Move on people. It’s the same drill every year.
Baseball fans discuss baseball matters. Yes there are snubs every year, and yes, every year fans will discuss the biggest ones. How about you move on Sally? You never do much but troll anyway. The least you could do was be funny once in a while.
You are funny enough for both of us.
Casey Mize deserves a spot on this All*Star team
Complete crap. Only one Phillies starting pitcher and not including NL hit leader Turner is ridiculous. MLB sucks
Well, there’s always the WNBA
Turner should be there and so should Soto. Tatis and Carroll shouldn’t be
Felix Bautista, anyone?
Phil Maton was robbed, but the good news is that B Donnie made it.
Corbin Carroll over Andy Pages?
Yes
Definitely!
Pages deserved it.
By a lot.
Feel like Pages has a good shot to make it as a replacement since Carroll’s hurt?
How come that other player from my team didn’t get picked? Robbed!
Where is Suzuki? He’s the RBI. He’s the one who was robbed.
DH only
Doesn’t deserve
So you think Ohtani who has pitched what is it now 5 innings belongs because he is only a DH? Suzuki has played the outfield
Ohtani has pitched 6 innings actually, oldguy58
Keysox….explain us Kyle Schwarber then…please.
DH happens to be a position now. Heck, players can even get in the Hall of Fame now, let alone an all star game.
It will be by next week…..Seiya was not going to get more votes than Ohtani and when it comes to reserves the players were always going to choose Schwarber over Seiya…that’s just how it happens.
When replacements happen and the league chooses, I’m guessing Seiya is pretty high on the list.
No harm, no foul at this point.
880 OPS, not 865. Its fine if you don’t believe that’s all star caliber at DH, but lets get the numbers correct.
Really great seeing a healthy deGrom back in the midsummer classic. Same goes for Buxton.
Dissapointed Bellinger didn’t make it though.
Am I missing something, or are there way too few reserve position players compared to recent years?
I haven’t watched in a while but I thought the position players split the playing time
Julio over springer??? Lol
I mean, Julio has 3.4 bwar so far this season, Springer only has 1.8. Julio has objectively been better than Springer
Defensively. George is better in just about every offensive statistic and nobody watches the allstar game for defence.
Idk that one time when torii hunter robbed bonds of a homer was pretty cool.
I know my Rangers don’t deserve a lot of representation this year, but Nathan Eovaldi earned a spot on this team.
They need to get rid of the rule that every team gets an all star. The Marlins and Rockies should have zero reps. How does Juan Soto not make the all star team? How does Ronald Acuna make it, he has barely played? Seiya Suzuki deserved to be an all star. Get rid of fan voting and let all the managers decide. Or better yet, just let me choose who is and who isn’t an all star, I can come up with more deserving players then the ones that were chosen
blah blah blah
Soto didn’t do anything to deserve to be all star this season.
Generational talent lmao.
Yes .900 OPS’s are a dime a dozen.
It’s an exhibition game for the fans. Who cares. More fans obviously wanted to see Acuña in it than Soto. And every fan is not someone posting on MLB TR daily. Some are kids who follow their hometown team and those fans deserve to have their team represented in the exhibition game. They should also have a say in who they want to see play in it. The same whining fans whine about the same thing every. single. year.
Get rid of fan voting? Tell me before the season started you had Crow-Armstrong, Wilson, O’Hara on your radar. The fans do just fine.
And…by the way….guess who picks and votes for the reserves….the PLAYERS and managers. Blame the players if someone didn’t make it…nobody else.
O’Hearn—autocorrect
Hunter Goodman of the Rockies is legitimately deserving. Maybe the best hitting catcher in the NL so far this season.
Maybe if Kelly and Smith weren’t the NL.
Ahh not even close compared to Will Smith.
its actually super easy and pretty much anyone thats seen a baseball game and probably even ones that havent would know why Ronald Acuna is in there over Soto especially experts.
First the game is in Atlanta and the home town hero pretty much gets in. Second Soto was dreadful for the first month and change for the season because he needed to adjust and people were pissed after he got the big contract. Third Acuna in per game has been better by pretty much every statistic and if it wasnt a herculean effort in June Soto wouldnt even be mentioned in the all stars this season and its a decent sample size and his history of it means it.
I love Soto and im glad he is swinging like he used to but it was just too much ground to make up to make it to the all star game. Probably gets in as an alternate.
@Roll Soto struggled the first month and a half. Acuna however didn’t play at all the first month and a half. Someone who has barelt played 50% of the games shouldn’t be an allstar
correct but again i point to first point, he is the hometown hero so of course he is getting in. Acuna had more votes before even playing.
Also Soto heated up a lot after the initial voting if i remember right initially Soto was like 6th or 7th and that was because of name. People were booing him at that point because his poor play which was adjustment time. Should those votes be counted or should they be removed? Those votes definitely were not deserved. and could be argued those votes should have gone to nimmo over him if you were going to give it to a mets player.
I’m an M’s fan. But I really don’t think Julio belongs on the team. He has skill and can be good, but this year he has sucked big time.
I mean, he has a 3.4 war already this year. On pace for 6+ war is pretty good. He hasn’t sucked
I’m a Ms fan as well as I do agree on a defensive stand point. Offensively he’s been weird alll year
Zach McKinstry is the biggest miss I see, top 15 in WAR in AL, and can play anywhere on the diamond. But every team has to be represented, so sometimes you just can’t put everyone in that deserves a spot
@wileycoyote56 Other then Skubal, every other Tiger was undeserving of being an all star. Just because your team is in first place doesn’t mean everyone should be an allstar
Only 4 players in the MLB have a better wRC+ than Michael Busch, and he didn’t even sniff the team.
This is coming from a mets fan and ill preface this i think elly should be starter but wasnt betts like right behind lindor for ss how come he didnt get in.
Large markets always stuff the fan voting box.
Javier Baez as an OF starter for the AL is a joke.
Fan voting
Must stop
10 players better
Keysox….get a clue…fans had NOTHING to do with today’s announcement.
The reserves are chosen by a vote of the PLAYERS, MANAGERS AND COACHES.
Those 10 better players were overlooked by their peers. Nobody else. This is not a new development.
Kershaw, GTFO… haha
Bryan Woo should be the AL starter. Only way he won’t complete 6 innings.
He’s been very good this year but I think you gotta go skubal if possible, though I can see a narrative case for degrom.
The Cubs got robbed!!! How is it the best middle reliever in NL didn’t make it… That’s okay Brais… we’ll watch it from UNO’s pizzeria!!!!
Seiya Suzuki should be there. 24 HR. 21 2B. 145 OPS+, and leads the MLB in RBI. Several big snubs, but he’s the biggest IMO. Valdez, Caminero, Pages, Pivetta, etc.
Agree with all of those RW
Michael Busch and Seiya Suzuki got snubbed
Yep
Compare Busch and Freeman’s stats
Compare Busch and any first basemen. He leads ALL 1b in OPS.
Not really much of a snub though. He’s done a ton of damage in the last week and I can make a healthy guess the players and managers voted much earlier for the reserves.
Springer, McKinstry, Suzuki, Jhoan Duran, Ryan, Soto. Sorry fellas. Every team needs a rep, so some losers make it instead of the players that have worked hard but happen to play on a good team.
It is supposedly the “fans game” so i think every team having to have a rep is better than the alternative which could be the manager loading up the team with his players as reserves
None of those guys have anything to do with balancing the numbers. Position players are voted in by fans
Tatis over Pages is a joke. Tatis doesn’t have all star numbers.
That ought to be an awkward clubhouse with Roberts, Machado, and Tatis
Bad link for Julio Rodriguez
I don’t understand taking Bregman as a reserve when he’s not likely to play. Give the spot to a more deserving healthy player without them having to be an injury replacement
Wonder what the reason why only Donovan made it. I think Burleson should been in the All Star game too.
Soto got going a little too late but could be added if there is an injury to the ASG roster.
There’s no crying in baseball!
Great movie, and I might make that my handle cause this one aged poorly
That saying definitely does apply to “This one belongs to the Reds” funny enough.
What are the chances Jose Ramirez gets traded this month? Cleveland is cooked this season and they really don’t look like they’ve got a seriously competitive team up-and-coming for 2026 either, Jose is nearly 33 with 3 years and $69 million left on the deal after this season, plus he has a full no trade clause… but, I could see him wanting a shot to win and I think it would actually be a smooth move for them to trade him right now because they could extract huge value out of him while he’s still in his prime.
I could be wrong but I think he really likes playing for Cleveland so I’d say low.
Slim to none because he has repeatedly said he doesn’t want to leave Cleveland and because he has a full no-trade clause.
Muncy should have made it and been replaced because of injury. He was the best player in June, not Juan Soto.
Quietly advocating for Carlos Narvaez…
It’s the All Star game not the All Having A Good First Half game. Players like Tatis and Rodriguez make it because they’re big names and this IS and always will BE a popularity contest to showcase the games biggest stars.
100% correct. If the dude is having a bad year, sure, leave him off. I think Ceddanne is having a better year than JRod, but he doesn’t have the history that JRod has, so I am cool with leaving Ceddanne off the team.
And Tatis deserves to make it on stats alone. I would choose him over Soto.
exactly. And it’s always been this way. And all these people complaining about Kershaw being named as an All Star: Mike Schmidt got voted onto the 1989 All Star Team and he was retired!
how the hell is Andrew Abbott of the Reds not an AS? yes im bias but his numbers dont lie…7-1 with a 2.15 era
For sure.
Listen, im not knocking defence…but its an allstar game.
Should daulton varsho be in every year? No
Stud pitchers going against the best bats.. thats what we most of us want to see.
Imo
