4:27pm: The Red Sox have officially announced the selection of Mayer’s contract. Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain to create room for Mayer on the active roster, while Casas was placed on the 60-day injured list to create a 40-man roster spot. Cora told reporters (including Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic) this afternoon that Bregman’s injury is “significant” and compared it to a quad strain Bregman suffered in 2021 that ultimately caused him to miss around two months.
1:39pm: The Red Sox are promoting top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Katie Morrison-O’Day of MassLive observed that Mayer was being congratulated by his teammates in the clubhouse at Triple-A Worcester. Her MassLive colleague Christopher Smith first reported that the former first-round pick is headed to Fenway Park.
The promotion comes as Alex Bregman navigates a right quad injury that seems likely to send him to the 10-day injured list. Bregman came out of yesterday’s blowout win over the Orioles in the fifth inning. He came up a bit gimpy after making an aggressive turn around the first base bag on a single off the Green Monster. He immediately exited in favor of Abraham Toro. The team is still awaiting MRI results from this morning. Manager Alex Cora told reporters (including WEEI’s Rob Bradford) that the star third baseman woke up with more soreness than he’d expected today.
Boston did not place Bregman on the IL before the first game of today’s doubleheader. There’s a good chance that’ll come between games tonight. They’ll also need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Mayer, but that can easily be achieved by transferring Triston Casas to the 60-day injured list.
Cora has already shot down the idea that Rafael Devers could see any third base time in Bregman’s absence. He’ll remain a full-time designated hitter. That means the 22-year-old Mayer should be in the lineup on a near everyday basis at third base. He obviously can’t be expected to replace the production they’re losing with Bregman’s absence. The two-time All-Star takes a .299/.385/.553 batting line to his likely stint on the injured list.
Mayer has very little experience at the hot corner. He started one game there in Double-A in each of the 2023 and ’24 seasons. He’s added four appearances in Triple-A this year. Mayer has taken the vast majority of his professional reps as a shortstop. He’d moved more frequently to second base over the past few days. That wasn’t because of any question about whether he can hold up at shortstop. It was instead in preparation for what seemed to be his best path to an MLB debut — playing second base with Kristian Campbell preparing to slide to first base after the Casas injury.
While there may be some growing pains given Mayer’s lack of experience at the hot corner, it’s common for shortstops to move to other infield positions. He has the plus arm for the position and is generally regarded as a sure-handed infielder. At 6’3″, Mayer is on the bigger side for a shortstop. His range, while adequate, has never been the strongest point of his defensive profile. That’s less of a concern at third base.
Mayer certainly brings a higher offensive ceiling than the utility options (Toro and David Hamilton) who may otherwise have replaced Bregman. The fourth overall pick in 2021, Mayer has been a feature on top prospect lists throughout his professional career. The left-handed hitter has moved a little more slowly than anticipated, largely because of injuries to his left shoulder and right wrist that affected him in 2022-23. Scouts have remained enamored with his power, polished strike zone discipline and overall natural athleticism.
That has been on display over the past two minor league seasons. Mayer hit .307/.370/.480 in Double-A a year ago. He’s out to a solid .271/.347/.471 slash with nine homers in 43 games during his first Triple-A action. He’s drawing walks at a strong 10.4% clip compared to a 19.7% strikeout rate that matches last year’s mark for the lowest of his career.
While the Bregman injury is the immediate impetus for Mayer’s promotion, there should be opportunity to stick past Bregman’s return if he performs well. The Sox may feel comfortable using Campbell at first base by that point, potentially opening second base. Mayer could also eventually supplant Trevor Story as the starting shortstop. Story began the season with a power barrage but has done almost nothing offensively for the better part of six weeks. He’s hitting .159 with one home run and 38 strikeouts in 122 plate appearances since his two-homer game on April 18.
Mayer will not reach a full year of service time unless he triggers the Prospect Promotion Inventive by finishing in the top two in Rookie of the Year voting. The Sox would not receive an extra draft choice under the PPI because they did not carry Mayer on the big league roster for at least 172 days. He would be on track to qualify for early arbitration as a Super Two player during the 2027-28 offseason if he’s in big leagues for good, though future optional assignments could certainly change that timeline.

finally. let the youth movement take place. bring up Anthony, as well.
of course, that doesn’t mean good news on the Bregman front.
You didn’t expect him to play the whole season for only $40MM?
It would’ve been nice. Unlike many people, I have always been a Bregman fan. He’s one of those guys that you knew that if he were on your team he’d give 110%, and you would dislike-but always respect- when on another team.
Maybe not the best comparison, but he reminds me a lot of Brad Marchand- a gamer that you despise unless he’s on your team.
Smk – Agreed, I too was not a huge fan of the Bregman signing for many reasons but there’s no denying he gives 100% at all times. As for your hockey comparison, he’s more like Ulf Samuelsson than Marchand.
Or if we’re sticking with baseball, and as much as I hate to say it…. Derek Jeter (not saying Bregman is as good as Jeter)
$30M.
yeah..another Yank I think of is Brett Gardner- wasn’t the best player, but was like a gnat that annoyed you- always played hard, made the most of his talents, and had a respectable MLB career.
fever- LOVED Ulf!!! saw him play against the Bruins while on the Whalers. was so sad when he and Ronnie Franchise were dealt to the Penguins…ugh.
I wish I had more thumbs up to give stymee.
Guy cheats with the best of them. Gave that cheating 110%.
I have Zero respect for anyone on the 2017 Astros
Alex Cora
Wade – His proctologist says the same thing ;o)
Hahahahaha! At least you didn’t say gynecologist.
Imagine if the nationals retained both Anthony Rendon and Steven Strasburg
Guy – Um, they did retain Strasburg :O)
Smk – Anthony would have a good chance to finish Top 2 for ROY, so he likely won’t get the call until July.
Mayer getting the call is great news!
If Anthony was really that good, it would be stupid of the Red Sox to waste months of production for a contending team on the off-chance that he gets extra credit for a year of service time this year. I don’t think the Red Sox organization is really that stupid.
The red Sox are thin at 1b/3b…
So what do they do?
They release Banelas from AAA. A guy with 1B/3B experience. He had a respectable slash, not going to be an AS, and did whiff a decent chunk…
But they didn’t give him a sniff
soxprospects.com doesn’t have Binelas ranked at all and haven’t for awhile. Not sure what it is, but people don’t like him.
Not sure either. But you’d think he’s in house you’d throw him up and see what sticks before just tossing him given the state of affairs
GaSox – Yeah the heat will only get worse the longer they hold RA down. Rafaela is about to dip into the .500’s for OPS and despite all the Duran hits, nobody is ever on base for him so it’s all wasted. What a mess this season is turning into.
Binelas was running a K rate around 40% in the minors. There is no way that flies against ML pitching.
Noda isn’t anything special either, but at least he makes a little more contact.
Kinda doubt either has a ML future.
Note that Binelas wasn’t on the 40-man roster. They would have needed to clear a spot to even give him a look. I like Toro and Gonzalez better.
The Goat has arrived
Hopefully it’s not going to be at the cost of Bregman (currently being assessed for a quad injury)
It likely will, but to be frank, if a couple weeks without Bregman is the price of finally nudging the front office to call the kids up, it’s a price I’m fine with paying.
hopefully, it’s only just a few weeks….quad injuries are tricky.
Only a couple weeks? Very unlikely for an injury described as “significant.” Is it still worth the price if Bregman is out for a couple of months or longer?
I made that comment pre-MRI while Bregman and Cora were both speaking as though it might be a minimum IL stint. 2+ months with Bregman is obviously not a positive thing.
Not a perfect comparison because of their body types, but this injury kept Trout out for three months last season
Meow – It’s comparable to the quad injury he suffered 4 years ago that cost him 2 months. No worries, KC will be playing 1B by then allowing Mayer to play 2B.
Is KC short for Rafael? Oh wait he must be moving back to third.
After how devers acted when breslow broached 1B after the Casas injury, the one thing we can be relatively sure of is that Boston will sign a scrub from the Mexican leagues to start 3B before letting devers play there.
Devers couldn’t play 3B decently last year, even before the weight gain. I don’t think 3B is an option for him now. Possible that he could learn 1B, as that doesn’t require as much athleticism.
Oh I know! That guy’s mouth has made it all but sure he won’t be wearing a glove any time soon.
Fever, the Red Sox were barely hanging in there even with Bregman carrying the team. Wait ’til next year…
Wait – The worst part is they’ve got a losing record despite having the 2nd-easiest schedule in MLB so far.
Have you checked out their June schedule yet?
3 vs Giants
3 vs Mariners
6 vs Yankees
6 vs Angels (hot team)
3 vs Rays (hot team)
3 vs Jays
At least they will miss Sale this weekend in Atlanta.
I just hope Anthony, Mayer and Campbell can play a ton of games with the Red Sox over the remainder of this season, otherwise you’ll have to change your handle to “WaitTil2027”.
Ideally the team trades its chips (Buehler, Chapman, Giolito, Refsnyder, Wilson) and uses the roster space to give PT to kids. I don’t mind losing, necessarily, but I hate the futility of going down with veterans who have no future with the team.
Wait – What about trading Bregman? He’d bring back a decent haul, even with teams knowing he would likely opt out after this season.
Fever – I think the feasibility of that depends on how his hamstring recovers? If he is ready to play by the trade deadline, then sure! And I bet the Yankees would give a bundle for him to patch their gaping 3B hole.
I don’t believe the Red Sox should consider giving him the LT contract he will surely be looking for. Very few players are successful into their mid 30s, and I don’t have any reason to believe that Bregman will be an exception to the rule.
He has sure been good this year, though.
Wait – Agreed! You know how I feel about the kids, I wanted at least Anthony up last year. If they don’t get a full year of learning at the MLB level, then they could suffer through growing pains into 2026 ….. which means WaitTil2027.
Right now I’m waiting until 2026, but I’m open to extending that as needed…
Wait – My memory is a little hazy on this, wasn’t there a time when injured players could not be traded if they were on the IL at the time of the trade? Obviously it changed prior to 2021 when the Sox traded for an injured Schwarber.
I think there would be a few teams that would be quite anxious to add Bregman, especially if they have the budget to renegotiate his contract.
BTW – I mentioned him possibly going to the the Yankees under another article, but my idea got shot down as usual. LOL
Wouldn’t it be great if next year it was Mayer at 3B, Campbell at SS, Grissom at 2B? I know I’m dreaming. LOL
Wait – Well it’s not like we have a choice!
Thankfully I still own about 8 of the ’04 championship hats and a few ’07, ’13 and ’18 hats.
Cora being relieved of his managerial duties would be a sterling silver lining to another non-playoff season.
Dodgers?
Campbell isn’t a very good defender, I don’t think you want him at SS. He can probably figure out 2B in time, but let’s be realistic here.
Probably another year of Story. Or maybe they get Moncada on the cheap. But longer term, I’m hoping Arias steps up at SS (he is a natural for the position) with Mayer moving to 3B.
Most likely… Maybe they can send us the next Verdugo, Downs, and Wong?
Wait – Campbell played 300 innings of shortstop in the minors. True he’s better suited for 2B, but if he doesn’t play SS then Mayer will need to …. which means who plays 3B?
If Story sticks around for another year or two, then that would mean he’s playing better ….. so yeah, Mayer at 3B and Story at SS.
I wanted Moncada for this season, and he’s doing quite well in Anaheim.
anything to wake up the team. i have no idea how cora still has a job for years boston has played like they’re hungover
Still got the 2018 championship rose-tinted glasses on.
my cat could have managed that roster to a championship and he has below-average cat intelligence
No, your cat would not have. If you blame someone when things go wrong, you need to give them credit when things go right.
I bet you’re fun at parties.
My cat could have if you told him that he’d get extra treats for winning the world series.
I think you are just not giving his cat the dues it deserves. Damn think can’t catch a mouse if it’s life depended on it but it can coach the hell out of a baseball team.
Mr. Snuggles is a genius when it comes to baseball strategy and you know it!
Don’t listen to them, I believe in your cat
thanks for that. he’s currently enjoying his position as director of minor league development for the pirates
John Henry likes him. Just wait until Cora is GM. You’re going to see a roster that equals the Marlins.
It will be like watching planes crash.
Stopped cheating after 2018 and can’t win. Traded Mookie for magic beans and still can’t win. David Ortiz is too old and can’t help them win. Dave Roberts is not stealing bases for them and they can’t win.
Rooting for the kid from Eastlake
LFG
now bring up Anthony.
Not exactly tearing up AAA, but ok.
He has an 818 OPS. And he’s getting the call because of injury.
It’s always exciting to see a young prospect get his first shot.
Garret Crochet has been worth 2.2 WAR this year. The pitching staff as a whole has been worth 2.1. Without Crochet they are a negative win pitching staff.
Wait till Crotchet folds like a house of cards in August from use.
Too many holes in the current lineup and with Bregman out it just got worse. Bring Anthony up also, and play him at first. They are athletes and changing at this level should not be a problem… move on Sox, or get left behind!
Boston has a great group of young players the time is now. Do they trade Devers for more prospects?? The future looks bright. I thought the same about Baltimore. I’m not sure what happened to them
If devers plus cash brought controllable ace level pitching it’d be worth it but that’s lala land
Devers for Berrios.
-0- chance.
Devers isn’t worth his contract and no other team wants a 13 year old girl in the clubhouse.
Devers might be the best hitter in BB since March. I’ll take my chances.
Actually, only #6 in wOBA, but 1st in RBI since March.
I’m moving Story to 3B and giving Mayer SS
Put Story at 1B.
Put Story in DFA purgatory.
Story is in the 45th percentile for arm strength. So you’re gonna put him at 3rd? Something tells me that would go poorly.
Sean – That would make more sense than Mayer learning 3B in the majors.
He’s played 50 minor league innings in three seasons and 84 innings at 2B recently. He’s aware of the responsibilities, they aren’t unfamiliar to his harder SS, this isn’t learning how to do splits to reach out for a thrown ball and hold a bag while picking a low throw.
I thought Bregman would mash being in Fenway. His career numbers are video-gamish. Well, he’s actually doing better on the road than at home this season so far.
Home .268/ .379/ .505
Road .330/ .391/ .600
Bob – I pointed that out a month ago. LOL!
It’s a mirage. His home BABIP is .289 and his road BABIP is .377.
Bob- that’s because he’s not facing Red Sox pitching anymore lol
Ask Devers to play 3B?
Devers is mashing right now to what may be his best statistical WAR season without playing defense which had hurt the team. Don’t fix what’s not broken.
This is why I always welcome EE fans on RS sites-they are more realistic than RS fans. Since the end of March, Devers might be the best hitter in BB. And you don’t fix one hole by creating a deeper and wider hole.
Keep Devers as DH and find a 1B.
He hasn’t given the team any choice. I bet he’d refuse to play 3B at this point.
YBC – Exactly… plus he hasn’t played 3B since last August, nor even in ST.
Maybe Devers will become Mid-Papi!
West – Or perhaps he will become like Manny, get traded to the Ddogers and become “Raffywood” ;O)
what happened to kcamp? ROY in april , batting under .100 in may
You would probably dfad pedroia after his start huh?
I think his BAbip is way down. He seems to hit the ball right at people lately. He hit two balls over 100 mph EV today right at people.
As a fantasy player with several teams every year, rookie hitters are the most overrated commodities ever. Everyone, including me occasionally, jump on these guys. Full-year sustained success is pretty unusual for a rookie.
Bing – Red Sox Nation believes Cora moving him all around is why his hitting has crashed.
@fever
He’d def benefit from a more consistent role
But he has 5 hits in his last 60ab
Cant be all attributed to being shuffled around
He was off to such a hot streak to start his career. Mayb pitchers learned how to get him out & he hasnt been able to adjust?
Very talented kid, hope he figures it out
Bing – He hasn’t been able to adjust because his mind is totally focused on learning first base and improving his play at 2B while also staying sharp as a CF.
No different than Raffy being the best hitter he’s ever been because he’s not having to spend time focusing on fielding.
I too am confident KC will be fine, once he settles into a position.
Campbell is showing signs of adjusting. He has been on base twice in the last two games.
@fever
devers is having the best season of his life bc he’s tryna prove to ownership, media, critics that he IS a superstar and not a 1 dimensional player who fans demanded to be traded
Devers may be the healthiest he has been in a long time since he is not slamming his shoulders into the ground diving for ground balls.
Cora has not been moving Campbell all around. Campbell has played 38 of 45 games at 2B.
I called it when he first signed. He’d do good at Fenway, but will spend his usual month on the IL, I believe were my exact words. 40 million is alot.
Hes actually alot better away from fenway this year..based on stats posted earlier in this thread
He’s better on the road this season
So far
Dsett – It’s really $31M with deferrals but yes it was not the best decision to sign him.
desett75: “but will spend his usual month on the IL”
==================
What? Games played by Bregman:
2022: 155
2023: 161
2024: 145
Suit, maybe I’ll look later for myself, but I find that not believable. That guy does (at least) a short stint on the IL every year
I recommend you look. If you look at Bregman’s career from 2017 to 2024, he only had injury problems in 2021 where he only played 91 games.
Fpg yes you are right its 31 with deferrals but he is owed 40 million any way you slice it for services renderd and when he is paid is not relevant..hes being paid 40 total for work to be performed this year
He’s not being paid $40M. He is being paid the PV of $40M. If your salary and my salary was $100,000, but I got the $100k on January 1st, and you received $5,000 a year for the next 20 years, are we both being paid $100,000?
Yes. Just at different times. The value of the money will change but the amount doesn’t. Semantics.
End the Fed
To a small market like Detroit, it’s 40 mil and semantics.
WadeBoggsWildRide
The value of the money will change
=======================
The value of the money is the salary. You lend me $100,000 and I will pay you $100/year for the next 1,000 years. The time value of money underlies the entire economy.
If you charge $10,000 on your CC, at 25% interest, and make all your payments, I’ll forgive the debt on your demise. That’s how interest works.
Every team in BB can defer salary. Not everyone can afford $30M.
But if you can afford $30M, then it is automatic that you can afford $40M 10 years from now.
Devers just won the game. His OPS is 17.548 since the meeting with the owner. His OPS+ is 6,381.4. His WAR is 4,615.3. And he hasn’t made a single error. He will win Gold Glove DH, easily.
Why did they pitch to Devers with 1B open in the bottom of the 10th?? What a gift.
Hayzee – Devers has singlehandedly won at least 5 games this season.
He’s already single handedly won the 2036 world series
He should have been drafted by the Pirates.
Welcome to the show young man!
I am pleased by this news but also reminded that there’s really no good reason not to also call up Anthony, move Rafaela to a utility role, and send down Hamilton or Toro. Shouldn’t have taken an injury to Bregman for them to start pulling the triggers on these guys when the bottom of the lineup has been so anemic.
Crocus – It’s service time manipulation, nothing more.
Are you saying it’s black and white here?
It’s not service time manipulation. He’s already guaranteed an extra year of control unless he comes up and finishes first or second in the rookie of the year then he would get that year back. If there is an injury in the outfield to a starter I think he’s called up immediately but if not we are probably looking at sometime in June before he’s called up. The thing is you don’t call up Roman Anthony to sit him he has to start.
The good news is I believe he’s ready. He doesn’t chase he uses the whole field, he loves to go to left, he hits lefties very well, and his power is all fields power. He’s a future star.
Bruin – That’s the point, if Mayer or Anthony finish Top Two in ROY then Sox lose a year of team control. The general feeling is neither will have a shot if they miss more than 80 games which means don’t let them get called up until July.
How else can you explain Rafaela playing every day in CF instead of calling up Anthony? The Worcester manager even said there’s no benefit in Anthony playing in the minors any longer, there’s nothing more for him to learn there.
Thankfully their hand was forced on Mayer because of the Bregman injury.
I would think the Sox would try to sign Mayer and Anthony to contracts similar to Campbells. Making service time a mute point. Unless they have information that they would not be open to such contracts. Casas reportably turned down this avenue. Regrettably for him. Can all 3 of these prospects become above average big leaguers, all-stars? Is Mayer going to be more like Nomar or Jed Lowrie ? Maybe John Valentin, I would take that.
Cd – Anthony was approached but is not interested, understandable considering his high ceiling.
KC signed only because he was desperate for the security and therefore was willing to accept a bargain contract. Anthony knows he can get far more than what KC got.
My understanding is Mayer wasn’t approached because of the injury history, his chronic back issues need to be resolved first.
Rafaela belongs in CF. Period.
Marceo Mayer=loser version of Volpe
Hard to be a loser of a loser. Minus minus your highness, Mayer is a weiner, Oscar. Why don’t you take a vacation. What’s your clearance?
Bregman has been good this season, has he been good enough to opt out of his deal in ’26?
Miller – Yes, so far.
What a bummer… hopefully Bregman is out for a long time…serves him right for turning down the Tigers offer
stay classy.
You mean like Bregman & Borass were, where they led the Tigers on for months knowing full well they weren’t going to sign with them? How low get you get when you’re talking about these 2 clowns?
That’s your problem. The Tigers’ GM could’ve shut it down any time he wanted to.
So you’re saying in a negotiation, Full Disclosure Rules! ?
Or is that just when you’re negotiating with Detroit?
Motown – Look at all the karma from the Devers-hate and management disrespect of him. Both Casas and Bregman down, I wouldn’t mess with Raffy. LOL!
Had suggested on here that the Red Sox are one of the few contending teams that actually line up well with what the Phillies have, particularly starting pitching and a right side of the diamond INF, Otto Kemp. He’s a 24 year old top 20ish organizational prospect, that leads the international league in everything including OPS+. Sox also need innings, SP or long reliever. Joe Ross OR Taijuan Walker (if the Red Sox would take him), plus Otto Kemp and a mid tier SP prospect (Ottenbriet) for Aroldis Chapman and Rob Refsnyder (RH platoon partner for Max Kepler). RR and Chapman are both on one year deals, and Kemp now even makes more sense for the Red Sox. They have 3 high leverage lefties in their pen, maybe they would part with one for innings and some upside prospects that don’t have a path to the Phillies right now.
The Sox are not trading Chapman. He’s been the anchor in what’s been a mostly very shaky bullpen.
They will if we aren’t in a spot for playoffs by the All Star break. If we are pulling .500 all year, he should be traded.
Paragraphs are your friend.
Otto is on pace for 191 Ks/600 ABs in AAA as someone close to 26 years old. I’d guess he has very little chance of success.
Not great news on Bregman, but good news on Mayer
Well I’m guessing Bregman sticks around for a second season now…
Mango – I don’t think so if he plays 2 more months and keeps his OPS over .850
Love it when someone feels sore and misses months of work. Not actually hurt, just sore…
There’s been a lot of swing and miss on sliders down and Mayer isn’t even close to touching them. This exactly is what prospect gurus were concerned for him. The numbers looked better in AAA this year because he was recognizing or just laying off more frequently, but his 2nd and 3rd PA tonight were a tough reality. The league is going to only throw him sliders down and fastball out of the zone like how the Orioles have pitched him tonight. A true slider show-me would be a worse-case scenario for Mayer.
He was trying to pull all of them. It reminded me of Chavis, but Mayer was also able to lay off some pitches. If he cannot go the other way with those outside pitches, he’s in for a tough ride.
Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen has always said his front side is too stiff. I guess what he meant is Mayer limited when trying to adjust mid-swing on pitch recognition as there isn’t enough flexibility to reach down and out on breaking pitches out of the zone. This means Mayer will be out and in front of those pitches — which would make it look like he was trying to pull the pitches. Rather, it isn’t his intention to pull the ball but a function of his limits how he deploys his body when swinging. I’d much prefer if it was him just trying to pull these breaking pitches because at least this is correctable and not an artifact of his development.
Wow, a better explanation than I deserved. That might be above my pay grade.
Hopefully Mayer can do something because a significant absence for Bregman is going to kill this team offensively
I doubt it will. They’ll still be a .500 team. Not better, not worse. Their offense on paper is fine with or without Bregman… it’s their inconsistency that is the problem. 19 runs one day and lose a one run game the next… Sox can’t close out series and that has nothing to do with Bregman.
The .500 Red Sox at it again. Score 19 runs one night, can’t hit the next. You can say they’re great with RISP, but not when it really matters. Joke Sox strike again. Fire Cora the doofus, as he pulls pitchers before they finish an inning. Every time he does that, inherited runners score.
Man, he was an MVP Candidate. See you in Sept.
Jay – Nobody expected him to continue playing like that all year, in fact since May 11th he was batting .216 with a .788 OPS and had struck out 4 times in a game for the first time in his career.
Yep exactly why I didn’t want them to sign him. Yeah he’s nice for Fenway but he’s a walking injury
batsbaseball
but he’s a walking injury
=============================
Bregman is #3 in games played among 3B from 2022-2025.
Players making 37 million dollars a year are not allowed to get injured
His contract is now void and he gets paid nothing for the year
(For reference watch the original Willie Wonka movie)
Lets recap Red Sox prospects:
Campbell-Overmatched
Rafaela-Lost
Bello-Underwhelming
Casas-Nice Nails
Sogard-Savannah Banana level
Oscar Meyer-0-4
Full Throttle, y’all
Nicely done… a 1918… reference and I would’ve given you a B+
Mayer’s .250 average is already higher than the lifetime average of every single Yankee product in their regular lineup. Romine, Rice, Dominguez, Cabrera, Volpe, all in the .220’s at best range. Pitiful.
olm – #12 right before the Preakness, $1 Tri, very very nice payout.
Belmont is my last one for the year, may the conditions be sloppy and a longshot comes through like Big Papi!
Mayer has played in:
91 games — 2022
78 games — 2023
77 games — 2024
Has anyone taken that into consideration?
oot – Yes, Red Sox Nation has always been concerned about Mayer’s chronic back issues and other injuries. But at this point, there’s really no other choice ….. gotta let the kid play and if he gets hurt then he will accrue service time while on the IL. If it’s a long IL stint, the Sox won’t lose a year of team control.
17 third basemen and first basemen could get injured for the Red Sox, but still Rafael Devers won’t play the field.
Fine with me.He raking at DH. He will likely keep his shoulders healthy by not smashing them into the ground diving for ground balls.
Exactly! Devers needs to DH, hopefully through his contract. He is an excellent hitter.
Shawn – At this point the team is right to not put him there. Remember, he hasn’t been allowed to play or practice all season and wasn’t allowed to play or practice in spring training either. So he’s had nothing to do with third base since last August. Obviously throwing him there now would be a horrific decision.
The Red Sox are still in it, they need Mayer and Anthony in the lineup, need Buehler to get it going and Kutter Crawford to get healthy.
Crochet
Buehler
Bello
Crawford
Giolito
is a rotation that can get them to the playoffs if they can stay healthy through September.
Fitts is coming back to the rotation soon. He just made a rehab start. I think Dobbins will then move to the pen as a long reliever.
Crawford is the best option behind Bello, better han Fitts, better than Giolito.
When is Crawford due back? I haven’t heard anything about him in awhile.
miller – The pitching hasn’t been that big a problem, it’s the offense.
They’ve got 4 really good hitters in Narvaez, Devers, Duran and Abreu.
They’ve got 5 really crappy hitters in Rafaela, Hamilton, Wong, Story and Campbell (until Cora stops messing with him).
And Mayer looks good so far.
Their biggest problem? Unquestionably Cora, who today showed yet again he doesn’t give a damn about winning.
BTW – They are now officially in 4th place, 9 games behind the Yankees in the loss column, only 5 games ahead of the Orioles in the loss column, and all despite having the 2nd-easiest schedule in MLB thus far.
That is rough I was thinking they had a shot this year.
Wade – They did have a shot this year. But so far, not looking good.
I still have a sliver of hope they promote Anthony over the next month and he lights a fire under them, Bregman returns and Cora stays far away from KC ….. then they will be in the WC hunt.
I’m certainly not gonna root for injuries on other teams, but that could happen too.
Hamilton and Wong aren’t (or shouldn’t be) starters. Hamilton is fine as a bench MI.
Story shouldn’t be a starter at this stage either, but he is signed for three more years, and you know Cora loves his veterans. At least they got a few good months out of him in 2022.
I have faith in Campbell. No denying he is going through a tough spot, though.
Rafaela isn’t a good hitter, by any stretch, but his glove makes up for it. You can live with him playing CF every day and batting ninth, even if he’ll never be better than average if he doesn’t learn some plate discipline.
Biggest problem is that they need another veteran star or two. Bregman was a big help, until he went down. But you can’t lean too heavily on rookies, as they can go through tough patches as we’ve seen with Campbell and Rafaela. There’s a couple years of learning at the ML level before guys really hit their stride.
Following along with you and Fever has been entertaining.
Wait – I always admit when I’m wrong, and boy was I wrong about Story …..I really thought he would be good this year. Not Colorado good, but solid defensively and a plus hitter. I guess him opting out is not in the cards? LOL
I have faith in KC too, but not until they stop throwing all these big asks at him. Ever look real close at his face? I’ve seen that look before ….. I’ve had that look before. It’s that feeling Duran had his rookie year, not good.
Rafaela better than average? As you know 100 OPS+ is considered league average …. he’s at 69 right now. I’m fine with keeping him as a super-sub, I just don’t want him blocking Anthony or causing a trade of Duran or Abreu.
You are 100% correct about the lack of veterans. They’ve basically got one non-pitcher with more than 2 years of MLB service time, that’s Raffy. This is a really young, inexperienced team.
When was the last time the Sox had all rookies in the 3-4-5 spots of the lineup?
Wade – I always enjoy interacting with Wait, he’s fun talkin’ ball with.
I’ve been a little more pessimistic on Story than that, but even so I had been hoping for more than this. He really hit a wall this year. Coming into the season I thought Story vs. Mayer was a tossup, now definitely see Mayer as the stronger option at SS. Too bad he is needed for 3B.
I’ve seen hopeful signs from Campbell the last week. He is mentally strong, but even so breaking into MLB can be immensely tough. Remember that he didn’t spend all that long in the upper minors. Glad he has been moved out of the #4 spot.
Rafaela is #23 of 25 CFs by wRC+ with 100+ PA, so his offense is clearly below average. At the same time he is #1 defensively. That adds up to #14 of 25 in total WAR. To me, CF is a defensive position and I’m totally fine with that combination at that position.
That said, Duran played a great CF last year and is clearly the better player at that position. And Anthony has huge offensive potential, even if it might take him a little experience to unlock it.
I like Anthony/Duran/Abreu with Password as the #4 (Jhostynxon, did I get it right?!?). But that isn’t really a knock on Rafaela, he is a solid second division starter.
Wait – Where did you hear KC was moved out of cleanup?
He was cleanup yesterday, and he’s cleanup today.
But yeah, he’s by far the least seasoned of the Big 3 …. he was in High A (Sally League) just a year ago! If you took a poll 2 months ago, everyone expected him to be the least likely to get promoted. It’s just incredible what they have been throwing at him the past few months.
Sure Rafaela is having a great defensive season, but the lineup isn’t good enough to support another sub-.600 OPS bat. They’ve already got one in Story.
I know Password looks promising, but for now Ref has been great in that #4 role. I’m thinking he will want to test free agency and become an everyday player which means with another team.
Sigh… I’ve been busy (kid’s college graduation), haven’t caught the last few games. I thought Campbell wa being moved down a couple places. I would much rather see him batting #2 or #6. Cleanup is a tough role.
Refsnyder has been great. Doubt he would hold up physically in an everyday role, but he is an asset to any team. Agree that it will likely be elsewhere.
Password has some work to do on strike zone judgement before he is ready for the majors. He isn’t Rafaela bad, but he isn’t ready yet.
Story or Rafaela. Rafaela or Story. How is this even a question?!? I know which of the two I would keep!
Wait – Congrats on your kid’s graduation!
Yeah once KC gets over the slump, I agree batting 2nd would be best with Raffy moving down to 3rd. But for right now I’d go with Narvaez, Mayer, Ref (replacing Rafaela) or Abreu (vs RHP) in cleanup.
Why is Ref always hurt? He seems to be in great shape, OF isn’t a physically demanding position, and he’s not that old.
Did you see Password was in a Jeopardy question the other day …. and I mean the question specifically referred to a “Red Sox prospect”.
If we are talking about who should be benched, it would be Rafaela only because he can play outfield whereas Story can’t.
If we are talking about who should be removed from the team, Story can’t be sent down to AAA and he’s got the huge contract. Rafaela can be optioned.
Let’s not forget Story started the season really hot at the plate. Can’t cut a guy loose after just one bad month, and his defense has stabilized.
Did you hear Manny Ramirez wants to be a hitting coach for any MLB team. I don’t see it happening, not even for a team like the Marlins or Rockies.
Yeah I’m not sure I see that either. He would have had to do some serious growing up to coach. Probably too much ego to start in the minors too.
Wade – He actually has coaching/consulting experience 2014-2016 in AAA with the Cubs Iowa team and also the Cubs, in fact he was instrumental in the development of Soler and Baez. Theo is the one who hired him.
Interesting.
The Mookie Betts trade was a win-win trade. Change my mind.
Racket – Yes, both the Dodgers and Mookie won.
Fever – they won twice. They’ll be going for win-win-win this October.
Why can’t we find All-Time Greats like MLB?
Wait – That’s a great way of looking at it!
Let’s hope Anthony doesn’t experience a similar fate 5 years from now. “We can’t afford to pay Roman what he wants because we are still paying Crochet, Rafaela, Campbell and Bello”.
It always irked Mookie that he was taken to arbitration, and I wonder if being kept in the minors this year will stay with Anthony for many years to come.
They could have afforded to pay Betts, they simply chose not to do so. They might or might not have offered him $300M, but a fair price for his talent at that time was in the $350M to $400M range. Henry and Dombrowski cheaped out.
With that savings, of course, they managed to sign Story AND Yoshida, with enough left over for a Kluber or three.
Wait – Great post!
One thing though ….. it was Bloom, not Dave, as the negotiations ended with the supposed $300M offer in January 2020.
BTW – Fitts is officially named to start tonight, probably only 70 pitches max.
Dombrowski had the best chances to sign him. I had very much been hoping for an extension in that ballpark signed before the 2019 season.
I’m not a fan of letting negotiations slide until 5 years of service time. Once you know the player is special, lock them up for life!
