The Rockies have acquired utility infielder Alan Trejo in a trade with the Rangers. Texas receives cash considerations in return. According to Thomas Harding of MLB.com, the Rockies plan to add Trejo to their active roster ahead of Sunday’s series finale with the Reds. They will need to free up space for him on both the 26 and 40-man rosters.
This trade reunites Trejo with the team that drafted him in 2017. He made his MLB debut for the Rockies in 2021 and played in 174 games for Colorado between 2021-24. In that time, he slashed .228/.276/.334, good for just a 54 wRC+ given the harsh park adjustments for the hitter-friendly Coors Field. While Trejo never offered much with the bat, he was a versatile defender, capable of playing second base, third base, and shortstop.
After he was designated for assignment last summer, Trejo became a free agent for the first time in his career and inked a minor league pact with the Dodgers. He spent the final three months of the 2024 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He then elected free agency again in November and latched on with the Rangers over the offseason. While he earned an invitation to big league camp, he failed to make Texas’s Opening Day roster.
Trejo got off to a rough start in 2025 for the Round Rock Express, the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate. Through 19 games, he hit just .211 with a .599 OPS and a 45 wRC+. Nonetheless, the Rockies clearly missed his versatile glove on their bench, so they’re bringing him back into the fold. With Ezequiel Tovar, Thairo Estrada, and Tyler Freeman on the injured list, the Rockies were short enough on infielders before Aaron Schunk hit the 10-day IL with a groin strain earlier today. Trejo will provide some much-needed depth. Presumably, he will take third-string catcher Braxton Fulford’s spot on the active roster. The Rockies called Fulford back up on Saturday when Schunk was placed on the IL, just a day after Fulford was optioned to Triple-A.
At last, the problems are all solved.
I came here to read “season saved”.
You did not disappoint!
Why, just why Rockies. Let me guess….You want to see him at second over Amador…
Jesus Rockies. You have to be kidding me. Can’t find anyone better? It’s hard to watch this team.
I agree. I bounce around games on the MLB app and can’t seem to click on the Rockies. There’s a force field at work.
You’re still watching! Damn, you are a fan. I’m seen crime scene photos more appealing than the Rockies.
Still another reason this organization needs to be cleaned out from the top down, no more scapegoats like Meulens. Sell the team Monfort.
It would be interesting (to me) to see if the Rockies could be a consistent contender with strong ownership and strong baseball leadership. Can they win in Denver with the ideal management team?
They need a fundamental shift in philosophy. Frankly they should be outspending every team on strength and conditioning. They have 30 years of data to draw from as it relates to altitude effect on every area of the game. They are playing a different game than the other 29. They should embrace the challenge.
In his 18 years of managing, two teams, he as had only 4 winning seasons. Only twice, has one of his teams finished higher than 3rd place. Super nice guy, maybe too nice, but is it possible that he and/or the organization are too complacent?
Black is not the problem, he is a good manager. You can’t make chicken dumplings out of chicken droppings.
It’s a depth move, folks. I don’t disagree, “is this as good as we can do?” But maybe it just is right now.
As soon as Tovar, Schunk, or Estrada come off the IL, Trejo will probably be DFAd again.
That said, no, he really has zero upside beyond being a plus-ish glove. I’m just a fan.
Fun fact: he was playing for MEX during the most recent WBC., starting infield I believe
Trade Estrada and let Amador take over regular duties at 2B. Nice up-the-middle combo with him and Tovar. Not gonna win a pennant with that move but it’s a start.
Amador has been starting, and starting Miller over Amador Sunday is a fine congrats for a 3 hit night Saturday. Mistake to start Miller, just keep Amador going, he’s almost up to a 300 obp
Goddamn jim Tracy Sunday lineups
I would not defend Rockies leadership in general, but I don’t get people trashing this move.
When you’ve got 4 infielders on the IL, and you’ve already brought up the only promising infield prospect who is anywhere near ready (Amador), you need to pick up someone who can play at the MLB level (even if he is more a AAA caliber player).
As somebody else pointed out, he’ll be DFAd when one or two of the currently sidelined players get healthy.
Another game changing transaction by the Rox, aka the worst run franchise in all of MLB. They should start cleaning house now. McMahon, Stallings, every OF on the current roster not named Doyle and the inept bullpen arms like Kinley. Trade German Marquiz and give him a chance to pitch for a for a winner. Bring up the kids and let them play. Woebegone to Wins and Losses. This season is already toast. Rox will be lucky to have 25 wins by the all-star break. Such a pity. Great place to watch baseball when it’s not snowing or freezing cold. Hey, at least the Broncos training camp starts in July.
I mean, what did you realistically want them to do? It sounds like their entire IF is on the IL basically and it’s not a strong farm system.
The kids are here. Toglia, Goodman, Amador, Tovar, Beck, Feltner, Dollander, Bouchard*, Halvorsen, Blalock, and I’m forgetting at least one reliever, and that’s all leaving out the guys who have been up and down.
Much as I don’t disagree with “play the kids”, I can’t imagine being Bud Black with like 4 dudes over the age of 32 and a bunch of 20somethings roaming around not knowing how to act
I, for one, hope we fire Black and hire Grady Sizemore, largely because I love Grady Sizemore, but we know even if that happened we’d just get Warren Schaeffer or Clint Hurdle and while I also love Clint Hurdle, I’d love if we did something interesting for once
